Harmonic rhythm

Definition: Harmony in itself has a rhythm, moving slowly in some places, faster in others; this is called harmonic rhythm which gives a sense of onwards movement to the music, the chords do no exist as just single entities but are arranged in relation to each other.

Often a chord will last for a whole bar, or at least for several beats. The technical term we use to describe this aspect of harmonization is harmonic rhythm.
