(the above diagram is my interpretation of the text in Unit 18, p.43)

  • The Upper Manservant, the Upper Maidservant and the Lower Maidservant are the keys that form the Master's indoor work-force, and you might expect to encounter them frequently about the house. The Day Labourer and the Female Outworker might enter the house but would not cross your path as frequently as the indoor workers. Black Maggie (a reference to the swarthy complexioned Queen Margaret of Sweden) is exceptional and might be encountered with the other more closely related keys.
  • If the Master were C Major, then the following would apply:
    • Upper Manservant (or Butler) - G Major
    • Upper Maidservant (or Parlourmaid) - A Minor
    • Lower Maidservant (or Kitchenmaid) - E Minor
    • Day Labourer (or Farmhand) - F Major
    • Female Outworker (or Milkmaid) - D Minor
    • Black Maggie - C Minor
