| Common error messages... or... it's not just you! | |||
Approximately the same 5% of errors come up 95% of the time! Phewie! If you can spot the common ones, you stand a fighting chance of sorting it out! So... drum roll please... here they are! Click on the number to get to the description and solution... Error number: 1044, 1037, 1003, 4052, 1027, 4016, 1043, 1010, 1030 and 4024 |
| Top | Error 1044 : "No FirstClass server with that name on the network" | ||
Solution: Double check your settings - Have a look at the Login box. Does the "Service:" box say something like: oufcnt2.open.ac.uk If it doesn't, then click on "Setup..." and where it says "Server:", type in the correct server details in the format "oufcnt6.open.ac.uk" - number substitution as before! |
| Top | Error 1037 : "The Conference is full please delete some items" | ||
Reason: The maximum number of items that a conference can hold is 1792... if you're trying to post number 1793 - then it won't happen! Solution: Get in touch with the conference moderator and ask them (nicely!) to archive / expire some messages. If it's an offline conference you're trying to post to, then just create a new folder (right click in blank space and select "New Folder") and drag the conference's contents into it. |
| Top | Error 1003 : "User ID or password is not valid" | ||
Solution: For working online, double check that you're using the correct User ID and password as given to you by the OU - and make sure that they're accurate - it's very easy to make mistakes! If you're getting into FC Personal (versions 5.X) for the first time, then the User ID and password are... User ID:
id For newer versions your user id and password match those for the FirstClass Client. When you get into FC Personal, chose "Who's Online", select the one name available, and change the User ID and Password in the menu that appears - be VERY CAREFUL that you are accurate at this point! |
| Top | Error 4052" : You must complete the last name entered" | ||
Reason: If you've started to type in someone's name as the recipient of an e-mail message, then change your mind and try to close the message... or do a message to a conference, then delete the conference name and try to close... you'll get a "4052" error message. This won't happen if you've never typed anything into the "To:" box, but will if you have!! D'oh! Solution: If you don't want to send the message but want to close it, the easiest thing to do is just to type in your own name, press return, close it, then delete it from your mailbox! |
| Top | Error 1027 : "The communication link has failed" | ||
Reason: You have lost your connection from your ISP, or your connection via a proxy server, and hence you've lost your connection to the FirstClass Client! Solution: Re-establish a connection with your ISP or proxy server!!! |
| Top | Error 4016 : "No matching names were found in the directory" | ||
Reason: The name you've entered isn't in the directory on that server Solution: Double check the directory. Have you spelled the name correctly? Does that person have an account on that server? If not, then you'll have to type their name in the following way: Sarah Fullard,oufcnt2.open.ac.uk - where the number represents the server that the person has an account on. |
| Top | Error 1043 : "A Résumé does not exist for this user" | ||
Reason: If you double click on someone's name and get this error message, then they've not completed their résumé... yes... I know... shocking, huh? It actually means that they've never even tried to do their résumé - perhaps they access FirstClass just via the browser or via FirstClass Personal... Solution: Not your problem! If they haven't completed it, they haven't completed it! |
| Top | Error 1010 : "You are not logged into the FirstClass Server" | ||
Reason: If you've had a "Communication link has failed message" and you're in the middle of typing something - when you go to post it, you'll get the "1010" message. Alternatively, if you've lost your connection and try to open anything on the FirstClass Client, then again this message will appear. Solution: Re-establish your connection with your ISP and go online. Bear in mind that any unfinished e-mails that you were writing when your connection died will still be in your mailbox! Phewie! |
| Top | Error 1030 : "You are not permitted to perform that function" | ||
Reason: You might well come across this when trying to view the permissions of some conferences or if you try to open a conference to which you don't have the correct access rights. Alternatively, where a message has been Solution: If it's a resource to which you need access, speak to your tutor, the moderator of the conference or to the LTS Helpdesk to see what's going on. |
| Top | Error 4024 : "Cannot open item until it is approved" | ||
Reason: If a message has been "disapproved" by a moderator of a conference, then the posting's details will be italicised. When you click on it, you'll get this message - you cannot read it. Some conferences have postings set that if they have attachments, they won't be allowed to be opened until they've been checked by a moderator. Some conferences have it set that all postings require moderator approval. There will always be a reason for this course of action. Solution: No solution! Messages are disapproved / pending approval for a reason - usually breaches of the FirstClass Code of Conduct... if you see a message that you've already replicated has become disapproved, do not quote it back from your FirstClass Personal - because your reply will then get disapproved!!! |
