Real-life design problems... or... these mistakes really do happen!

Yicky colour and graphics, frames that cut off logos, links that don't work, ill thought out content... text you just can't read on the background! Each link has a mini-critique highlighting what I think are the problems... you might agree... you might not... I've tried not to be too cruel though! After all - when you put together your first web page - it's a major achievement to be proud of!! :o) At least it shows everyone can have an off day!

Top Whose site? What's up with it?
  Violet Mouse

Problem areas : Over use of "Flash" animation, incorrectly sized graphics, awful background music, poor HTML editor, strange roll-over effects

The over long, hard to read open sequence is just one of the problems with this site - and the creator is offering web design services! Take a look...

  Creative web design

Problem areas : Awful background music, last update... out-of-date, recommending an out-of-date browser, lots of animated graphics and icons

Another "professional" web design company - the main problem with this site is the terrible music that accompanies every page! Very distracting!

  National Career Search Partners

Problem areas : Animated dividing lines, legibility (text on background), poor navigation tools, non-linked e-mail address, scrolling, page layout

Very hard work! Finding your way about this dated looking page is difficult - the menu appears half-way down after much scrolling!! Another issue is the text on the background - you'll give up trying to read the content!

Top Boston Manor Hotel

Problem areas : Legibility (text on background), image size (370kB and more!), underlining, spaces in web page name

Have a look at the URL - the page has been saved as "BMH Hotel2.htm" - which becomes "BMG%20Hotel2.htm"... remember, spaces are a no-no in web page names! The underlining which may or may not be a hyperlink is also confusing... oops!

  Picos

Problem areas : Animated Images, overly complicated tables, sound

Very very hard to read this site! And a frightening number of animated graphics which take ages to load and the author has forgotten to credit! Whoops!! Tables have been used - but... well... take a look at the site to see if you think they were effective!

Top Tankman Computer Services

Problem areas : Background, poor quality graphics, background, bloated HTML, background, did I mention the background?

The background keeps on changing - flickering is a better description to be honest! All of the linked images still have lovely blue hyperlink borders and they're offering web design services. Oh dear!!

  Best Hydroponics

Problem areas : Pointless warning messages, hideous animated background, legibility (text on background), missing graphics, excessive advertising banners, length of download time

It's almost hard to credit that this is a genuine site - but it is. This one will take your breath away! You cannot read the text on the background, and... well... see for yourself!!

Top Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Page

Problem areas : Gharish background, music, legibility (text on background), inconsistency of layout, length of download time

A sweet site, but what hard work! The background is great... if you don't want to read the text that's on it. The layout is confusing to say the least, and it seems everything is at least one screen's scroll away. Oh, and make sure you right click!!

  MoMA Workspheres

Problem areas : Tiny text and generally style over content!

This site is from the Museum of Modern Art - and it's design taken that little bit too far. The text is miniscule and the content is minimal. The most confusing bit of all are all the tiny "post-it" notes within the main Workspheres pop-up page...
