  Emphasis... or... making your point???

Click on the links below for explanations to some common emphasis problems!!

I've underlined stuff to highlight it... now everyone's confused!!

I used blinking text, but it's not showing up!

Scrolling text... where did that effect go?

1. Underlining = confusion for your audience!!

On the web design tips page point 4 was:

4.  Here's a good tip - emphasise words by using underlining!

How many of you went to click on the word "Here" and the word "underlining"?

Whenever you see a word that's underlined on a web page your brain thinks... "A-ha! There's a link!!"... and so your next move is to click on it to follow the link. If it's just an underlined word - how quickly will your audience get annoyed? Yup... very!!

If you want to emphasise something use bold or strong tags... try putting the word or sentence on its own line... indent it... It's up to you! Just bear in mind, that an underlined word on a web page is very different from one on the printed page.

Top 2. Blinking text - use carefully - cuz it may not show up!!

Remember point 14 on the web design tips page?

14.  Blinking text - excellent in Internet Explorer!

If you've got Microsoft Internet Explorer... this effect WILL NOT SHOW UP! It is not supported by that browser and will only work in Netscape Navigator. If the blinking effect (which irritates a lot of people... word to the wise!) is essential to your page, then you must be sure that 100% of your audience has Netscape Navigator. In other words - think very carefully about using it!

Top 3. Scrolling text - might not work - and it's not your fault!

Scrolling text - or the marquee effect - is yet another that is browser specific. If you want your text to scroll... as in point 15 on the web design tips page...

15.  Scrolling text - use it - especially good in Netscape Navigator!!

... then be warned - the scrolling effect won't show up in Netscape Navigator.

It's a problem well known by web designers - the fact that things supported - or rather, things that'll work - in one browser, aren't necessarily supported in another. Always check your page in more than one browser. Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator are an absolute minimum couple of browsers to check with.
