Questions and answers on FrontPage and T171/TU170!

May your worries be over and your marks be high!!

<don't ask, Priscilla wrote that bit, not me - she's obviously under stress, poor love!>

  1.  What is FrontPage 2000?
FrontPage is a web site creator. It allows you to create single web pages or a complex group of interlocking pages to form a web site on your computer. Uploading these pages to a server then allows others to access them through a browser.
  2.  Why do I need a web site creator?
You don't. You can write html code yourself and upload that. You can also use single page web editors such as Netscape Composer and link your pages together.
  3.  So why FrontPage if this other stuff is free?
FrontPage and other web site creators provide site management; navigation aids and other tools to build a complex site relatively easily.
Top 4.  Is FrontPage the best web site builder?
FrontPage is not considered the best but it is probably fair to say that it is the best value for money.
  5.  I hear that T171/TU170 tutors do not like FrontPage
FrontPage has drawbacks. Many of its features can only be used with FrontPage compatible servers. The OU server is not FrontPage compatible. This means you need to take great care in using this software for TMAs and the ECA. Follow these instructions and you should be safe.
  6.  Any other drawbacks to FrontPage?
Like so much that comes from Microsoft, code is bloated. It does not produce 'clean' html. This becomes more of a problem when you need to find an error and correct it. Also, it 'prefers' Internet Explorer (surprise!) so it is important to use a Netscape browser to check that the pages can be read in all browsers.
